How to show up in ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI search engines
Published 2026-09-24 · Updated 2026-09-24
To show up in AI search engines, the AI needs to be able to find you, understand what you offer, and trust that you're a good answer. Here are seven steps to get you there — in the right order.
Step 1: See how you rank today
Start with a baseline measurement. Ask questions like "best [service] in [city]" and "what does [product] cost" to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google. Note whether you're mentioned, whether you're linked, and which competitors get picked instead.
Step 2: Make it obvious who you are
The AI needs to understand exactly what you sell, to whom, and where. Have a clear About page, use the same company name and address everywhere, and add Organization or LocalBusiness structured data.
Step 3: Answer the questions customers actually ask
Create pages that answer the questions customers ask before they buy: pricing, comparisons, how it works, who it's for. The heading should be the question, and the answer should sit right underneath.
Step 4: Let the AI crawlers in
Check that robots.txt isn't blocking GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended. Block them, and the AI simply can't read your site — which means it can't cite you either.

Step 5: Show up in Google Maps and Shopping
Local businesses should have a complete Google Business Profile with reviews. Ecommerce sites should have a product feed in Google Merchant Center. Both are used as sources by Google AI Overviews and Gemini.
Step 6: Get mentioned by others
Find lists like "best X" roundups, industry media, comparison sites and forums where your category gets discussed. A single mention there often carries more weight than a new page on your own site.
Step 7: Measure and repeat
AI answers keep changing. Measure the same questions every month, see which actions moved the needle, and keep pushing where competitors still win.

Frequently asked questions
Can you pay to show up in ChatGPT?
No, there's currently no way to buy a spot in ChatGPT's organic answers. Visibility is earned through content, technical setup and mentions.
Why does ChatGPT mention my competitor but not me?
Usually because the competitor is mentioned on more external sites or has pages that answer the question more clearly. Our premium report shows exactly which competitors and sources AI is choosing.
Does this apply to small businesses too?
Yes. Local and niche queries often have few good sources, which makes it easier for small businesses to become the answer AI picks.
